Did you know that newborn babies can’t see properly? The baby doesn’t look directly at me, she looks above my head, what’s she looking at I wonder… my aura? She stares at the wall like its MTV. I stare at the wall wondering if I should bang my head against it. Nah its not that bad this motherhood malrkly… I think I have a good baby…she sleeps quite a lot and only cries when she needs to like when her nappy is wet, she has wind, or she’s tired or hungry. It must be so upsetting if you can’t console your baby. Jesus its horrible when she gets wind, her face screws up and she looks like she is going to explode and she wails and wails and then this almighty loud fart pops out and everybody on the bus looks at me like its me that pumped! Did you know theres a room in mothercare just for feeding? It smells of poo and is full of mothers and prams and babies stuck on boobs. Ah and its acceptable to feed your baby there no-one ogling you like you’re a freak! Its crazy that in this country we avocate ‘breast is best’ yet actually do it outside of your home and people feel uncomfortable around you… I can understand if the child is like 5 years old having a mum ready meal but nursing your newborn in public should be encouraged. We need more facilites in public places, if a shops/café’s etc had nursing rooms they would attract more customers come on retailers sort it out! I go to mothercare just to feed the baby when I’m in town rather than do it in a café and have people stare. On the isle of Wight ferry port they have a nursing room to feed the baby as standard, it should be like that everywhere. It is easy I suspose to just put a shawl over your shoulder and feed but sometimes I worry she will suffocate, I wouldn’t wanna eat my dinner with a blanket over my head would you?
Having a baby is like having a big sign on your head saying ‘strangers please talk to me’, you can no longer slip into your local shop with no make up on and hope no one will notice you, now everywhere I go people make comments about the baby usually it’s something like “Enjoy it dear they grow up so quick” or “How much did she weigh?’ Why are people obsessed with weight already…Its a competition - the one time in your life it’s good to weigh more than others! I met a pregnant woman recently and whilst she looked terrified in case it ran in the family her husband boasted “I weighed a stone at birth” A STONE! I asked if that was in the Guiness book of records but apparently not in 1955 a baby was born to an italien mother who weighed 22 pounds!
